Lesson four "The Serving Gifts
Another classification for gifts is serving gifts the first mention of this is found in the book of Romans 12:7 when Paul speaks to the church at Rome concerning the gift of service. The Serving gifts are: prophecy from 1 Corinthians 14:1, Ephesians 4:11, and Romans 12:6, teaching is found in Romans 12:7, evangelism is located in Ephesians 4:11, The gift of encouragement was included in Paul’s letter to the church of Rome in Romans 12:8. He goes on to mention the gifts of mercy and giving in this same passage in chapter 12:8. Paul speaks of the gift of evangelism and the pastor-teacher gifts in Ephesians 4:11. A gift very closely associated with the Pastor-Teacher gift is the gift of prophecy, which is taught in Romans 12:6, Ephesians 4:11, and 1 Corinthians 12:10, 28. In Romans 12:7 and 1 Corinthians 12:28 Paul spoke of the gift of serving and in verse 8 of this same chapter of Romans and in the same verse in Corinthians he taught about the gift of giving and administrations.
For the sake of this study, we will deal with those gifts, which are appropriate for determination of ones usefulness in the local church. The gifts that can be easily determined to determine ones role in the local church by the Nominating Committee of Canadian Valley Baptist Church. The gifts of which we will look at are the serving gifts. They are made up of some nine different gifts. All these gifts have to do with some supernatural endowment that has been given to the believer by God for the edification of the church or the evangelization of the world. The first gift we will look at is prophecy.
Prophecy 1 Corinthians 14:1, Ephesians 4:11, Romans 12:6
Prophecy is the God given spiritual endowment to boldly declare the truth of God in such a way that it edifies, encourages, and builds up the church. The Apostle Paul spoke of the gift of prophecy as a superior gift. It was a gift that according to Paul’s own words brought edification, exhortation, and comfort to the body of Christ. Certainly most all the Apostles had this gift. Paul most certainly did. Therefore, the gift of prophecy would be the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by proclaiming God’s truth. Another practical illustration would be the hell-fire-brimstone preacher who points out sin.
Teaching Romans 12:7, 1 Corinthians 12:28-29, Acts 18:24-28
The gift of Teaching is a God given spiritual endowment given for the express purpose of equipping a believer to be able to comprehend, then articulate, and apply a truth from God’s Holy Script to His people. Aquilla and Priscilla would be an example of some believers that scriptures give evidence of having the gift of teaching. We find in Acts 18:24-26 they were teaching Apollos and then in 1 Corinthians 16:19 they were having church at their house.
Therefore, the gift of the teacher is the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by making clear the truth of the Word of God with accuracy and simplicity. A simple example would be the scholar making clear the doctrines of truth and certain teachings of the Bible.
Evangelism Ephesians 4:11, Acts 8:26-40, Luke 19:1-10
Paul wrote to young Timothy and told him to “Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.”[1] Paul is sharing with young Timothy to fan the flame of evangelism, which the Lord had departed unto him. When Christ met the woman at the well in John 4:28-29; 39-42 the woman dropped what she had came for and left to share with her village about Christ. This same woman immediately brought them to Jesus. One would have to say she had the gift of Evangelism. Evangelism is the God given gift to share the gospel of Jesus Christ that non-believers respond in saving faith. All people are called to go and share.[2] However, not all have the gift as we see here in scripture.
Encouragement Romans 12:8, Acts 11:22-24; 15:30-32
One example of this gift is seen in the person of Barnabas. We find him in Acts 9:26-27 being a huge encouragement to Paul after his conversion. Barnabas was the only church leader who took Paul under his care and ministered to him. Later in chapter 11:22-23 we find Barnabas went and found Paul to take him to Antioch where there was a great work of God taking place. They both stayed there for a year teaching and ministering to the church of Antioch. The gift of encouragement is the God given ability to build up, shore up, and affirm those who are afflicted, discouraged, or weak in their faith.
Thus, the gift of exhortation is the God-given ability to desire to serve God by motivating others to action by urging them to seek a certain path of conduct. A good example of this would be the teacher who has the ability to share and implement learning in an application-oriented fashion.
Pastor-Teacher Ephesians 4:11, Romans 12:7, 1 Peter 5:1-4, John 10:1-18, 1 Corinthians 12:28-29
The gift of the pastor-teacher is one that can also be a gift as well as serve an office in the local church. One is spiritually gifted to share facts, truths, and even guidelines for living from God’s Word. One teaches for a change in a lifestyle of his listeners. It is not limited to a Sunday school teacher nor the Pastor, but it can encompass both or neither. So the person who has this gift is enabled by God to comprehend, explain, and apply the truths of God Word to his listeners or students whichever they may be. Therefore, the gift of the Pastor-Teacher is a God given capacity to serve God by overseeing, training and caring for the needs of a group of Christians. Of course, a good illustration of this gift would be a pastor who leads, feeds, and loves the church God has given him to serve in.
Mercy Romans 12:8, Matthew 5:7, Mark 10:46-52
Mercy is the gift of divine enablement to cheerfully and practically help those who are suffering or are in need. This person is an example of compassion in action. He is one who focuses on relieving the pain and suffering of others. It is his desire to express love and compassion to those who are in hardship or crisis. Typically, the person with this gift concerns themselves with individual or social issues that burden people. It is the God-given ability to serve God by empathizing with and bringing help to those who are in distress. He is a person who relates with and comforts his brother or sister in Christ.
Serving 1 Corinthians 12:28, Romans 12:7, Acts 6:1-4, Romans 16:1-2
The gift of serving is also a divine enablement or endowment to accomplish practical and necessary tasks, which free up, support, and meet the needs of others. These are the people who serve behind the scenes wherever they are called upon to support the spiritual gifts of others. People with this gift see tasks that need to be done and take pleasure in doing them for the Lord Jesus. They see it as their spiritual calling to perform practical service. They receive a blessing out of being able to free others up for their own service in God’s Kingdom wherever that may be. The gift of serving is the God given ability to want to serve God by giving help or aid in both physical and spiritual situations. This person is one who is involved in meeting the practical needs of his fellow Christians and the church.
Giving 2 Corinthians 6:8, Romans 12:8, Luke 21:1-4
The person with the gift of giving has the joy of being able to give money liberally to the work of the Lord. People with this gift often limit their lifestyle so that they might be able to give the maximum amount to the Lord. They are interested in meeting tangible needs so that spiritual growth might occur. Often they have a special ability to make money so that they can use it to further God’s work. Most commonly, this individual is one who meets the financial need of his brother and sisters in Christ.
Administration 1 Corinthians 12:28, Acts 6:1-8, Exodus 18:13-26
The person with the gift of administration have been endowed the ability to develop strategies or design plans to achieve specified goals. They are able to assist the local church become more effective and efficient. They have been enabled with the innate skills to create order out of confusion. They love to organize people, duties, and events.
The Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by organizing, administering, promoting and leading the various affairs of the church.
The man who leads the church and its ministries.
